Fight against Asian wasp
16-12-2021
Considering the number of nests in the county of Vila Nova de Famalicão, the Municipal Civil Protection Service has adopted a new strategy to exterminate wasp velutina nests, also known as Asian wasp. Since the beginning of October, it has been destroying them by inoculating a solution composed by an attractive solution for wasps’ velutinae, with aggregation pheromones, developed especially for this purpose.
It was possible to verify that this system is more effective than destruction by incineration, previously in force, as it allows the extermination of a much larger quantity than that verified by the previous method, only feasible during the night.
It should be noted that, in 2021, until December 13th, about 1340 hornet nests were exterminated in Famalicão.
After the nest inoculation, the Civil Protection Operational Team affixes, in the place, a document informing the accomplishment of the same. Despite the existence of this notice of deactivation of hornets' nests on site, and because they are still visible, there have been numerous inaccurate reports and circulation of false news on social networks, relating to nests already exterminated and without any activity.
Remember that you can report the existence of a hornet's nest, contacting the Civil Protection services, by phone 252317336 or email protecaocivil@famalicao.pt, or by contacting the respective parish council. It is also possible to signal wasp nests on the platform https://stopvespa.icnf.pt
