Christmas is almost here and, as in previous years, the municipality of Famalicão has prepared 4,850 solidarity hampers - made up of codfish, olive oil, vermicelli and sugar - which will begin to be delivered by the Parish Councils to the most needy and vulnerable families in the municipality.
In a symbolic way, and in representation of the 49 parish communities, the mayor of Famalicão, Mário Passos, handed over solidarity hampers on Thursday 12th to the Mayor of Vilarinho das Cambas, Judite Costa. ‘With this gesture, we're going to help Famalicão families have a slightly more filling supper.’
Once the hampers have been distributed among the parishes, they are then given to families who have been signposted by the municipal services and the parish presidents. ‘This isn't going to solve a social problem that's been going on all year, but it's a kindness that the town hall and the parishes are giving to make these families‘Christmas more special,’ said Judite Costa.
It should be remembered that, in some cases, the parish councils reinforce the hampers.
The distribution of solidarity hampers has long been a tradition promoted by the Famalicense council.
