This Sunday morning, Father Christmas will distribute more than two hundred presents to needy children in the municipality, in the Praça-Mercado Municipal. This is the fourth year in a row that Famalicenses have been able to sponsor a child with proven economic need and make their Christmas wishes come true.
In this new edition of the solidarity campaign, organised by Famalicão City Council's Social Solidarity department, more than 300 Famalicenses signed up and the wishes of more than 200 children came true.
‘Famalicão has come together once again to fulfil the dreams of these children. And although we have a large number of wishes, we have an even larger number of godfathers and godmothers available to help and to improve Christmas for the little ones,’ said the mayor of Vila Nova de Famalicão, Mário Passos, at the solidarity and cultural event that culminated in the handing over of the presents. ‘Famalicenses have really embraced this project and this shows what a supportive community we are,’ he added.
Through this initiative, citizens can sponsor a child up to the age of 12 and fulfil their Christmas wishes. To do this, godparents have to sign up afterwards to receive a letter from each sponsored child and find out what gift they want.
In 2023, the Christmas wishes of around 200 children with proven economic deprivation and living in the municipality, signposted by the municipality's Social Assistance and Monitoring Service, were fulfilled.
