Hirayama is a quiet man who is content with life. The little time he has left over from his job as a cleaner, he devotes to the simple pleasures of reading, music and photography. He feels grateful for what he has and knows how to find meaning in every detail. His past is revealed throughout the film as he meets people close to him. In competition at the Cannes Film Festival - where Kôji Yakusho won the award for Best Actor - is a drama filmed in Japan by Wim Wenders, the acclaimed director of Paris,Texas, Wings of Desire, Buena Vista Social Club and Pina. The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best International Feature Film.
