After the success of "Bicycle Thieves", "The Miracle of Milan" brings an audacious mutation to neorealism, mixing social realism with the most unbridled fantasy. Totò is a naïve, good-hearted young man who has come out of an orphanage. A tramp takes him in on a bad night and he decides to organise a "city of happiness" for the indigent in a vacant lot. But when they discover that there is oil there, the capitalists decide to expel them. And that's where the "magical" element comes in, in the form of a dove given to him by his grandmother, which descends from the sky, and which Totò uses to scare away the invaders. De Sica recognises the influence of Chaplin and René Clair, but brings it to life in an extremely creative, poetic (Bazin said that there was no director in the world who had, like him, the sense of the poetry of a face), comic and human way. The Italian filmmaker was thus building another future classic in the history of cinema. Screening with restored digital copy.
