We are in the midst of the Jubilee, celebrating Christ's redemption. Pope Francis wanted the theme of the jubilee year to be: ‘Pilgrims of Hope’. We ask ourselves who were ‘those who were able to give future generations reasons to live and hope’. In Mary, the mother of Jesus, we find this reason to live and hope. What animated her on her journey? Hope!
Pope Francis tells us in the bull proclaiming this year's Ordinary Jubilee 2025: ‘Hope finds its highest witness in the Mother of Jesus. In her we see how hope is not an ephemeral optimism, but a gift of grace in the realism of life. Like all mothers, every time she looked at her Son she thought about his future, and she certainly carried in her heart those words that Simeon had spoken to her in the temple: ‘This child is here for the fall and rise of many in Israel and to be a sign of contradiction; a sword will pierce your soul’.
This exhibition of sacred art aims to take a chronological approach to the life of Mary, including images of Marian cults venerated in the Vila Nova de Famalicão archpriesthood.
