In April, the Choir and Orchestra XXI celebrate Easter with a programme based on one of the great landmarks of late Romantic religious music: Gabriel Fauré's Requiem. Deviating from the dominant currents of his time, Fauré uses a vocal approach reminiscent of Gregorian chant and impressionistic harmonies to create a work that points to an intimate and contemplative vision of death. To open this concert, the orchestra will also perform Johannes Brahms' Serenade No. 2 - dedicated to Clara Schumann and considered by many to be his first orchestral work. Separating these two larger pieces, Coro XXI will bring to the stage Manuel Cardoso's six-voice motet Sitivit anima mea - a short reflection on death that will serve as a prelude to the Requiem, while honouring one of the leading authors of the golden age of Portuguese sacred polyphony.
