In a cabin in the heart of the Japanese Alps, botany professor Kazuhiko Onuma observes two newlyweds while spending time with Tsuruko, his mistress. In the evening, Kazuhiko's wife confronts him about his extramarital relationship and Tsuruko, an inevitable bystander, leaves the professor the next morning. For decades to come, whenever he visits the cabin in the mountains, the memory of Tsuruko will haunt Kazuhiko forever.
