Architect László Toth and his wife Erzsébet flee Europe for post-war America. They endure poverty and indignity, but the architect's genius is eventually recognised by industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren, who commissions him to design a modernist monument. It will be the most ambitious project of Toth's career and he will have to balance his uncompromising vision with the influence of his patron.
