The parish of Esmeriz, in Vila Nova de Famalicão, inaugurated the new Mortuary yesterday, with the blessing and handing over to the population of the new building located next to the church.
The space, built on land provided by the parish, has two floors: an upper floor prepared to make it more comfortable for families when their loved ones leave and for funeral ceremonies, and a lower floor for the activities of the parish and the parish social centre.
The project received municipal support totalling 183,000 euros.
‘We want to improve our communities and here we are responding to a need in the parish with a project that will bring more dignity to the moment when we say goodbye to our loved ones,’ said Mayor Mário Passos.
The blessing of the new mortuary in Esmeriz was presided over by the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Braga, Delfim Gomes, and the parish priest Nuno Vilas Boas.
‘It was a project that we had wanted to realise for a long time and which was made possible by involving the community, the parish, the parish council and where municipal support was fundamental,’ explained the president of the parish council, Armindo Mourão.
On the main façade is an artistic panel by the ceramics school of the Castro Alves Foundation, which aims to symbolise all those who are involved and have contributed to the community dynamics of the parish.
