Cineclube de Joane Programme (No More Cinephiles?!, integral Kinuyo Tanaka)

Casa das Artes | Small Auditorium - 22h30

General admission: 4 euros | Students: 2 euros | Free for members of the Cineclube de Joane | Original title: Onna bakari no yoru (Japan, 1961) | Directed by: Kinuyo Tanaka | Cast: Kyôko Kagawa, Chisako Hara, Chikage Awashima, Akemi Kita | Rating: M/12 | Running time: 90 min.

Young Kuniko lives in a rehabilitation centre for ex-prostitutes. Despite the kindness of the director, life is not easy and, like all her comrades, she hopes to leave the institution regenerated. She is offered a job in a grocery store, but the landlady's husband and the men in the neighbourhood are very unruly. Kuniko runs away and goes to work in a factory. Faced with the nastiness of the other employees, she quits her job again to join a rose greenhouse. There, life seems to get easier, but the young woman's past will come back to torment her.

Note: The screening of Girls of the Night will start at 22h30 and will be preceded by the talk "Who are you, Kinuyo Tanaka?" by programme maker Miguel Patrício, which will start at 21h00. This lecture, which lasts about 1.5 hours, traces the artistic profile of Kinuyo Tanaka, one of Japan's greatest actresses, and explores the progression of her career, the difficulties she experienced as a woman, and her late foray into directing. We emphasise that this lecture does not focus specifically on the films she directed, but tends to introduce this great figure of Japanese cinema and, we can say today, one of the greatest female directors in the history of cinema.
