In Hamlet, created by Nélia Pinheiro and premiering in 2024, the tormented prince from Shakespeare's tragedy is played by dancer Gonçalo Almeida Andrade. Nélia Pinheiro's new creation, with script and artistic accompaniment by Suresh Nampuri (IST physicist and creator of Já International Theater) transcends Shakespeare's words and dives into the realm of raw emotions and existential anguish. On stage, Gonçalo Almeida Andrade embodies Hamlet's duality, exploring his internal struggle between revenge and conscience, madness and sanity. The set design, costumes, subtly dramatic lighting and sound composition all contribute to creating an intense stage atmosphere. The audience is invited to immerse themselves in the solitary journey of a man who questions existence, morality and purpose, capturing the timeless essence of Shakespeare's work in a contemporary way.
