Nelly, a bourgeois woman with an organised life, meets Loulou, a lost young man. Violently thrown out by her husband, she moves in with him. She soon becomes pregnant, but Loulou doesn't change his marginalised life, which he divides between his friends and petty night-time robberies. Several French films from this period illustrated two stars and a fashionable subject, emotional relationships between people from different classes. But Pialat has mastered his craft to such an extent that he overcomes all the pitfalls of the star system and naturalism, and the result is totally convincing, foreshadowing his work with space and actors in ‘À Nos Amours’.
