Born on 25 August 1918, Leonard Bernstein was the son of Ukrainian Jews who emigrated to the USA at the beginning of the 20th century. As an adult, he became conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and was recognised internationally as a great talent in classical music - which, at the time, meant being recognised in Europe. He also became famous for his televised concerts and Broadway musicals - including "West Side Story", one of the most popular musicals of all time, which was adapted into a film twice: in 1961 by Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise; and in 2021 by Steven Spielberg. He died of a heart attack on 14 October 1990, aged 72. Premiered at the 80th Venice Film Festival, this biopic was directed, starred in and co-written (with Josh Singer) by Bradley Cooper and tells the love story between Bernstein and Chilean actress Felicia Cohn Montealegre (1922-1978), to whom he was married for 25 years and with whom he had three children: Jamie, Alexander and Nina Bernstein, who supported the entire production of the film.
