The universe of the operetta ‘Maria de Buenos Aires’, composed by Piazzolla, libretto by Ferrer, is dreamlike and hallucinatory. Divided into 17 scenes, it alternates between sung, recited and instrumental sections, dealing with themes such as life, death, resurrection and motherhood. The current version, seeking a better balance between the musical and textual dimensions, reinforces the interaction between music, dance and dramatic action. The plot follows Maria, a bohemian nightlife figure from Buenos Aires, who moves between the worlds of the living and the dead on a journey of female empowerment. In the first part, summoned to her presence by the Duende, Maria returns to her life of lust and her journey is marked by a series of abuses. Wounded and hospitalised, Maria finds herself between life and death. In the second part, Maria returns as a shadow among the undead, reliving existential dilemmas. Finally, when she receives a message of love from the Leprechaun, she becomes pregnant. At the climax, Maria is reborn from her own shadow, aware of her fight against female oppression and emerging as an icon of power and freedom.
