Rui Fernandes was challenged to practise the viola amarantina in 2018 and fell in love. Since then he has dedicated himself to creating original compositions with the clear purpose of showing that this instrument has much more capacity than the label it is given for being used only in popular or traditional music formations. Rui Fernandes explores timbres, techniques, chords and arpeggios, building a huge and surprising variety of musical moments in each song, which he increased by inviting a trio of musicians: Pedro Neves (piano), Miguel Ângelo (double bass) and Ricardo Coelho (percussionist). This is how the Rui Fernandes Quartet was born, with the aim of putting together a concert with unique characteristics and whose primary objective is to publicise the viola from Amarantina, helping people to know that, despite its name, this is a viola from the world.
