Music and nature, in an intimate and uncompromising atmosphere, are the ingredients for Friday afternoons in August in Vila Nova de Famalicão, with Devesa Sunset, which will take place on the 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd of next month by the lake in the city park. Milhanas, Flyte, Nancy Vieira and Cristóvam are the artists in this edition, which invites you to a relaxing evening at sunset, with music as company.
The first meeting at Devesa is on 2 August with Milhanas, an artist whose debut album ‘De Sombra a Sombra’, released in 2023, explores the shadows and laments of Milhanas, in a kind of self-portrait. The singer was nominated for ‘Breakthrough Artist’ at the Play Awards and Golden Globes, where she also received a nomination for ‘Best Song of the Year’. Mixing modern interpretations of fado with pop and urban music, Milhanas promises to become a landmark of contemporary Portuguese music through the unique identity she brings to this concert, where Rodrigo Correia and Bernardo Saldanha will accompany her on guitar.
On the 9th, Devesa Sunset hosts Flyte, a project by British artists Will Taylor and Nick Hill. With three critically acclaimed albums, they have established themselves as a leading indie, folk band in the UK. Their latest album ‘Flyte’ was released at the end of last year and it is this album that they are presenting for the first time in Portugal, following a concert at the iconic Glastonbury festival.
Next up on 16 August is the project by Nancy Vieira, often called the heir to Cesária Évora. ‘Gente’ is the album that the artist brings to Devesa, with a sound of formal traditionalism that promotes a particular magic, where there is a lot of Cape Verde, morna and samba, fado and batuque, sophistication with jazz overtones and pop-minded adventure.
The final guest at Devesa Sunset is Azorean musician and singer Cristovám, who will close this year's edition on 23 August. Cristovám released his first album ‘Hopes & Dreams’ and won first prize in the ‘Unsigned Only’ category of the International Songwriting Competition, in front of a panel with names such as Tom Waits, Keane and Lorde. He also won two International Portuguese Music Awards for ‘Best Pop Performance and Song of the Year’.
Devesa Sunset has been promoted by the Famalicão Municipality since 2015 and takes place every Friday in August, in a relaxed atmosphere that brings culture together with nature. The concerts take place by the lake in Devesa Park, start at 7pm and are free to attend.
