In 1937, when Japan occupied Manchuria, Ryuko, a young woman from a good family, was informed that she had been chosen, through a photograph, to marry the younger brother of the emperor of Manchuria. Forced to leave Japan, she has to get used to her new life as a princess. A baby girl is born shortly afterwards and Ryuko seems to be happy in the Palace. However, when Soviet troops prepare a new invasion, Ryuko is forced to flee on foot, accompanied by her daughter, but also by the Empress herself.
