"Tonight We Improvise" (1930) concludes Pirandello's "theatre in the theatre" trilogy, which, by placing doubt at the heart of discourse, revolutionised the way of acting on stage forever. Here we start with a director who, in front of the audience at a premiere, proposes to his actors an improvisation based on a short novel by Pirandello, Leonora, Addio!. This will be the starting point for a baroque labyrinth of doubts, uncertainties, opposing feelings, contradictions, fights, arguments, insults, irrational outbursts, a merry-go-round of life. It all starts from the suffocating day-to-day life of a provincial town, where dreams are repressed and sexuality explodes - and with it jealousy, "and the most terrible of all: jealousy of the past". The whole play develops in a shameless relationship between the spectators and the actors. Discussions about staging, the performers' doubts, the director's choices, all this unfolds in front of the spectators, as do scene changes, lighting effects, in a kind of whirlwind of effects that announces the fiction of reality.
