For six years, Jean and Catherine were lovers. He never wanted a divorce and still lives with his wife. She lives with her parents. They see each other every day in hotels, cars, during holidays, weekends. They love each other, argue, fight and then reconcile. One day Catherine decides to break it off. Pialat's first big hit, which earned Jean Yanne the prize for best male performance at the Cannes Film Festival. Pialat tackled one of the most frequent themes in French cinema, the crisis of a couple. But with his ability to work in intense and concentrated dramatic blocks, Pialat gave this largely autobiographical film enormous strength, thanks to his ability to film the actors as if it were a documentary and to force them to abandon the habits that make the work easier and less interesting.
