1950s. On the west side of New York City are the poor neighbourhoods, where the most disadvantaged families live. There are also two gangs there: the Sharks, made up of Puerto Rican immigrants, and the Jets, made up of mostly white youngsters. They are constantly in confrontation and swear to be rivals to the death. One day, Tony, former leader of the Jets, meets Maria, sister of the head of the Sharks. The passion between the two is immediate and ill-accepted by both groups, leading to escalating hostilities. Directed by veteran Steven Spielberg ("E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial", "Empire of the Sun", "Schindler's List", "Munich", "Lincoln" or "The Post"), this romantic drama is the remake of the story already made into film by Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise, in 1961, and which won ten Academy Awards. The script is based on the celebrated Broadway musical, written by Arthur Laurents, which, in turn, is inspired by the eternal love story between Romeo and Juliet.
