From this Thursday, in the centre of Vila Nova de Famalicão, there will be a leisure and social space for Famalicão's senior citizens. At Espaço Sénior, in the centre of Praça D. Maria II, older people will be able to occupy their free time with educational games, from Monday to Saturday.
‘Socialising is the best way to improve the well-being and quality of life of the elderly,’ explained the mayor of Vila Nova de Famalicão on Wednesday at the opening of the space. ‘This place provides exactly that. Seniors have a space here to chat, read the newspaper, play games and spend a good deal of time interacting.’
‘If I can, I'll be here every day,’ said Armindo Costa, one of the seniors who decided to visit the space when it opened. ‘It's a good place to hang out and play some cards.’
The Senior Space is located in the old Tourist Office, in Praça D. Maria II. The space has been refurbished and equipped with an area for playing various games - cards, chess, draughts, dominoes, among others - and an area dedicated to reading newspapers and magazines.
‘This facility is in addition to many other projects in the municipality aimed at senior citizens,’ says Mário Passos, adding that the municipality wants to continue creating “facilities and structures that promote the well-being and quality of life of senior citizens”.
The centrality of the Senior Space is also an asset for the mayor of Famalicense. ‘The fact that it is located in the heart of the urban area allows the elderly to be even more included in the social life and day-to-day life of the city,’ he explained. The proximity to the Student Residence, the Vila, and the respective students also promotes ‘interpersonal and intergenerational relationships’.
Seniors will be able to use this space from Monday to Saturday, between 9h00 and 12h30 and between 14h00 and 18h00.
