Where is Pessoa?
Portugal, 2023 | Directed by Leonor Areal | Rating: M/12 | Running time: 60 mins
Historian Leonor Areal takes footage from the exit of a concert at the Teatro República (predecessor of the current São Luiz) shot in 1913 and offers the audience a game of ‘Where's Wally?’ in search of Fernando Pessoa, of whom it was thought there were no moving images. There won't be more than two or three minutes of images of this ‘departure of the spectators from the symphony concert’, but it's a delight to follow the way Areal takes them apart, identifying the day on which everything happened and the characters that appear, with many surprises along the way, from Amadeo de Souza Cardoso, António Ferro, António Silva, Augusto Ferreira Gomes, Eduardo Viana, Ernesto Vieira, Florbela Espanca, Jorge Barradas and Stuart Carvalhais. Selected by the Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival.
Where's Zeca?
Portugal, 2024 | Directed by Tiago Pereira | Co-produced by Festival Política and A Música Portuguesa a Gostar Dela Própria | Rating: M/12 | Running time: 60 mins
Music is emotional, it touches the senses and the collective, then you can intellectualise and rationalise its impact, its discourse. Any song intervenes in a public space, because any manifestation in that space is always a political act. As well as being an author, those who make music and songs have their context, their background, their origins and their ideas. What we're trying to do here is listen to these authors and make their voices known by analysing them collectively. José Afonso marked a time but he is still present. There is still this very Portuguese idea of a face, of an individual who made a mark with his vision and completely different way of doing things, who can come back and save it all, but aren't we all capable of doing that every day? Where is Zeca? Where are we?
