Vila Nova de Famalicão City Council is in the Top 10 of the most efficient large municipalities in the country, and is the eighth Portuguese municipality with the best score in the ranking of the 2023 edition of the Financial Yearbook of Portuguese Municipalities published this week.
With a score of 1219 points, Famalicão climbed four places in the overall national ranking compared to 2022, and is the most financially efficient municipality among all the municipalities in the Braga district.
This result emphasises the improving trend in Famalicão's financial efficiency, which has always been among the best in the country since the ranking was drawn up 20 years ago. Between 2017 and 2023 alone, the municipality went from 16th to 8th among municipalities of its size.
‘It's a historic result for Famalicão that demonstrates the rigour and sense of responsibility with which we're running the municipality,’ says Mário Passos.
The report, which every year presents an economic and financial analysis of the accounts of Portugal's 308 municipalities, also presents other indicators that confirm the good health of Famalicão's municipal accounts.
Famalicão is the fourth large municipality (23rd in the global ranking) with the most balanced budget in 2023 and is among the Portuguese municipalities that contributed the most to reducing public debt, with repayments being higher than the volume of loans used. Unlike 2022, when there was a negative difference between the value of new loans and the amortisation of previous ones, in 2023 the municipality of Famalicense was the 8th largest municipality to reduce municipal bank debt, with an amortisation surplus of 3.1 million euros.
‘We continue to be a good example of how to manage the public purse,’ adds Mário Passos, guaranteeing that ‘rigour and responsibility will continue to dominate the actions of this municipal executive.’
It should be noted that the Anuário Financeiro dos Municípios Portugueses (Financial Yearbook of Portuguese Municipalities) now released presents an economic and financial analysis of the accounts of the 308 municipalities for the financial year 2023, including a detailed analysis of the local business sector.
This publication marks the nineteenth financial yearbook of Portuguese municipalities, covering the period from 2003 to 2023.
The Financial Yearbook of Portuguese Municipalities 2022 is the responsibility of the Centre for Research in Accounting and Taxation (CICF) of the Polytechnic Institute of Cávado and Ave (IPCA), coordinated by Maria José Fernandes, a member of the CICF, with Pedro Camões, from the University of Aveiro and Susana Jorge from the University of Coimbra as authors, and a member of the Political Science Research Centre (CICP) of the University of Minho.
This twentieth Financial Yearbook of Portuguese Municipalities analyses the individual accounts of all Portuguese municipalities (308), 142 municipal companies (out of 159) and 23 out of 25 municipal services.
