On 4 October, the municipality of Famalicão is organising the first edition of the
Older People's Friendly City Days, a meeting that will take place at the Camilo Castelo Branco Municipal Library, starting at 9.30am, and which aims to highlight the good practices of sustainable and active ageing in the municipality of Famalicão, which recently joined the World Health Organisation's (WHO) Global Network of Older People's Friendly Cities and Communities in recognition of the municipality's public policies aimed at older people.
Mayor Mário Passos will open the event. The initiative will also be attended by Fernando Paulo, Porto City Council's Councillor for Education and Social Cohesion, and Carla Faria, a psychologist and professor at the School of Education at the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo. Before the debate, scheduled for 11.30am, the municipal projects ‘More and Better Years’ and ‘Network of Senior Academies’ will also be presented.
It should be noted that this initiative joins a number of other projects and measures implemented by the municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão to promote active and sustainable ageing and materialise the commitment to continue adopting policies and services to respond to the needs of the elderly.
Next week in Famalicão will also be dedicated to this theme, namely with the ‘Go to the Village’ urban market on Active and Sustainable Ageing, which can be visited in Praça D. Maria II, between the 5th and 6th of October (Saturday and Sunday).
During the weekend at the market, seniors can also take part in the senior gymnastics class, scheduled for Saturday at 4pm, also in Praça D. Maria II. On Sunday, at 10am, there will be a zumba class and, between 3.30pm and 5.30pm, Famalicenses can watch the performance of four tunas from the Famalicenses Senior Academies.
Also on the 5th (Saturday), at Casa do Território, there will be a Town Meeting on Active and Sustainable Ageing, between 10.00 and 12.00.
All the initiatives are free to attend, but are limited to the capacity of the spaces.
