Over 26,000 people visited the renovated facilities of the Camilo Castelo Branco Municipal Library in Vila Nova de Famalicão last year.
Since it reopened to the public - following the renovation, extension and modernisation work - the Famalicão Library has hosted 121 activities promoted by the Educational and Cultural Service, with more than 4,000 participants. During this period, around 11,000 literary documents were also lent out.
‘More than satisfied with the improved conditions of the building, we are proud of the assiduous presence of those who visit us every day: our readers,’ says the Library team.
It's worth remembering that the Famalicão Municipal Library reopened to the public on 28 September 2023 (Municipal Day) with a space prepared to meet today's study and reading needs.
The renovation, expansion and modernisation work involved a municipal investment of 2.6 million euros with the aim of creating, enhancing and expanding different spaces, such as the Eduardo Prado Coelho Room, the Local Fund room, a new audio-visual room, a new multifunctional room for group use, among other areas.
As well as celebrating one year since its refurbishment, the Camilo Castelo Branco Municipal Library is also celebrating its 111th anniversary this Saturday, 5 October.
Its creation was announced on 7 September 1912 at a session of the Vila Nova de Famalicão Town Council, chaired by Senator Sousa Fernandes. A little later, at the session of 23 November 1912, it was decided that the future library would be named after the writer Camilo Castelo Branco. Once the library's catalogue and regulations had been completed, the long-awaited day of the Municipal Library's inauguration arrived, on 5 October 1913, when it opened its doors to the public with a document collection of two thousand four hundred and thirty-nine volumes.
The Municipal Library currently has five centres: Riba de Ave, Ribeirão, Joane, Lousado and Pousada de Saramagos.
