When humanity went extinct, a laboratory project was underway to create a new species of human being, destined to repopulate the earth and genetically designed under an ethic of care. Four survivors, including a specimen of this new species, are now trying to ‘repair’ the world so that they can live as well as possible. Or they dream of it. In 2008, Cristina Carvalhal directed Cândido ou o Otimismo (Candide or Optimism), an adaptation of Voltaire's work, which at the end leaves us with an enigmatic suggestion: ‘we must look after our garden’. It is from this enigma that this show arises. Based on research into the journey from prehistoric societies to the present day, with a special focus on Europe, we try to reflect on some of the dogmas that inform our thinking when we question the way we live. In other words, how can we prevent the destruction of people, ecosystems and knowledge, imposed by organisational models that we insist on perpetuating?
