António Santos Pereira is the winner of the Alberto Sampaio History Prize 2024, an honour with the scientific seal of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, coordinated by the Martins Sarmento Society and sponsored by the Famalicão, Braga and Guimarães City Councils.
The award ceremony will take place on 1 December, the birthday of the award's patron, and, in accordance with the rotation provided for in the regulations, this year it will be held in Vila Nova de Famalicão, more precisely at the Alberto Sampaio Municipal Archive, with a programme to be announced in due course.
The winning entry will be published, also in accordance with the regulations, in the Revista de Guimarães.
In the opinion of the jury, constituted under the aegis of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, which is entrusted with the scientific direction of the Prize, the essay by António Santos Pereira, retired professor at the University of Beira Interior, entitled ‘O Fundão pré-industrial: spaces, resources and products’, stood out from the others in the competition “for its careful and meticulous use of historical sources, for the density of the information collected, for the quality of the historiographical production, for the subtlety of the writing, the study revives traditional Gardunha communities in their labour experiences and practices, in their production and exchange of knowledge, setting itself up as an exemplary work in economic and social history studies”.
The Alberto Sampaio History Prize, initially instituted in 1995 by the Municipalities of Guimarães and Vila Nova de Famalicão and the Martins Sarmento Society, renewed in 2016 and since then also counting the Municipality of Braga among its founders, is designed to honour and keep alive the person and work of Alberto Sampaio, promoting the development of scientific studies and research in areas linked to his legacy, especially in the disciplines of Social and Economic History.
The prize, now in its 7th edition, is designed to honour a historical research study within the scope of Portuguese economic and social history, or within the scope of other historiographical fields associated with Alberto Sampaio's legacy, and involves a monetary award of 6,000 euros, financed in equal parts by the municipalities involved.
